Dental Insurance, What are Waiting Periods ?

Friday, Nov. 11th 2016 6:19 AM

In our prior post about preventive, basic and major services we talked about waiting periods.  But are are waiting and how can they effect you?

A waiting period is the length of period (time) that an insurance company will make you wait before they will pay for certain dental services.

Many PPO and Indemnity dental insurance plans policies define a waiting period of six months for basic and 12 months or longer for major dental care. Today you can find some PPO’s and Indemnity dental insurance plans that offer no waiting period. However, they may limit you on the benefits paid out within the first year of the plan.

Dental Healthcare, Supplemental Dental Insurance

Wednesday, Oct. 19th 2016 6:27 AM

Supplemental dental insurance is an individual or family insurance policy purchased to cover a portion of the dental costs generally up and above or beyond the primary dental plan. Supplemental dental insurance will normally not cover the entire dental care procedure. But instead is synchronized or works hand-in-hand with your basic dental policy.

If you have a primary dental insurance plan that you purchased or your employer provided, the supplemental dental policy typically covers the remaining dental bill.

For example, if the dental plan policy covers half of the dental cost, the secondary or supplement dental insurance plan should cover the remaining balance of your dental procedure subject to any co-payments or deductibles already included in the policy.

A supplement dental insurance plan may also be purchased to cover the dental charges when there are annual dental benefit plan limits or exclusions. Say your primary policy has an annual maximum benefit of $1000 you may be able to purchase a supplemental dental plan to extend this benefit.

Most importantly you need to check with your dental office to see if they will coordinate the dental coverage since the dentist is the one most likely to bill the insurance company and ask you to pay any difference or the co-pay. Thus, a supplemental policy can come in handy.

Affordability and Maximum Limitation of Dental Insurance Plans

Thursday, Oct. 13th 2016 6:32 AM

It is important to understand what is a yearly dollar maximum limitation and to compare yearly maximum coverage on a regular basis before selecting any dental insurance plan. The dollar amount that a plan will pay you during one full year is very important factor to consider while choosing the dental insurance plan. For most PPO’s and Indemnity dental insurance plans they will have yearly maximum limitation, normally ranging from $500-$2000.  The yearly dollar maximums, renew on an automatic basis every year. You should be aware of that amount that is not used within a given year will not roll over into the next.

Example: Suppose you had $2000 yearly maximum for 2016 but you only spent $1500 of it. You may think that since you still had $500 at the end of the 2016 then for 2017 you are going to have $2000 + $500. Unfortunately that is not the case. Your funds are not cumulative. For 2017 you still will have the same $2000 as a yearly maximum for full year.

However the maximum is also per person so whether you have one person on the plan our four people on the plan each person has the 2000 maximum limitation per year.  When shopping dental insurance with a maximum limitation, you want to think not only of your current dental needs but future needs so you can get the right maximum limitation that best fit those needs.   Also make sure you work with your dentist when dealing with maximum limitation so that services could be scheduled out in a way that best saves you whenever possible.

Example: Going back to the same 2000 limitation, say in a given year your dentist says you need $3500 in dental services. See if it possible to have part of what needed towards the end of the year and the rest done in the being of the next. Doing so you will then receive benefits for the whole $3500 without going over your maximum in a given year.

Affordable Dental Plans – HMO

Sunday, Oct. 9th 2016 6:35 AM

Affordable dental insurance plans from an HMO may have a limited pool of dentist to select, but it is a more affordable insurance plan. If you are self employed and looking for a more affordable dental plan, a discount dental plan may be an alternative.

Discount dental plans are not dental insurance plans. A discount plan partners with dentists to provide customers with a savings on visits to the dentist office. The downside to discount dental plans is that they are not regulated and you have limited recourse if you experience dental plan problems.

Dental Healthcare, Preventative Dental Services and Care

Friday, Oct. 7th 2016 6:16 AM

Preventative care is important, even on baby teeth.  Preventive dental care can often go undone do to rising cost of dental care and no dental insurance.  Parents who do not feel they can afford dental insurance, and who do not receive dental benefits though work can often put off preventive dental care.  Not because they want too, but simple put they can not afford it.  However even on baby teeth preventive care is very necessary because even a little cavity can still turn into a big pain later on.
