Dental Insurance Healthcare: What Lesions at the Back of Your Mouth May Mean.

Thursday, Apr. 18th 2024 12:46 PM

If you notice any lesions at the back of your mouth, it’s essential to take it seriously. These lesions could be a sign of oral cancer, which is not very common, but it’s not rare either. According to the American Cancer Society, oral cavity or pharynx cancer is estimated to affect 45,780 new cases in 2015, which is just over half the number of expected skin cancer cases.

The human papillomavirus infection (HPV) is the most common cause of cancers at the base of the tongue and tonsils (called oropharyngeal cancers). These lesions can appear anywhere in the mouth but most likely develop under the tongue, around the base, and near your esophagus.

It’s important to note that oral cavity and oropharyngeal tumors are twice as likely to develop in men as in women. The American Cancer Society has reported a recent increase in cases of oropharyngeal cancers linked to HPV.

Therefore, paying attention to any lesions in your mouth and seeking medical attention immediately if you notice any changes are crucial. Early detection can improve the chances of successful treatment and recovery.
