Dental insurance plans, Looking for dental insurance

Sunday, Jun. 20th 2010 1:57 PM

I have been without dental insurance for over two years now when I was no longer accepted on my parents plan.   Now I am on my own trying to get dental insurance but the truth of the matter is I really do not understand how dental insurance works.

What is better for me to get a dental HMO or a dental PPO.   Lucky I am still on my parent health policy for another year but I want to have at least an understanding of dental before I worry about what I will be doing for health.

For a student an HMO may be more affordable for you. Not only regarding the cost of the dental insurance plan but for the dental services render.

You will need to choose a dentist in the HMO dental insurance plan network provider data base. So unless you are trying to stay with a dentist I would suggest looking an an HMO dental insurance plan first.

If you are trying to stay with your dentist knowing what plans their office takes would be the first step. Other wise I too agree that for a student on a fixed income going to an HMO dental insurance would be more affordable.

PPO are much more expensive with waiting periods and yearly max limits. However, they would allow you to choice your own dentist. When buying a PPO just make sure your read and understand the policy terms and conditions.

For me I got a PPO I wanted to stay with my dentist. It cost me about 45.00 a month. Well really it cost my mom that much since she said if I pay for the dental services she would pay for the cost of the dental insurance.

I took her up on it because there was no way I was changing my dentist that I have be going to since I was six.
