Dental Healthcare, Immune system selectively disarmed by gum disease bacteria

Sunday, Oct. 5th 2014 6:00 AM

The human body is comprised of roughly 10 times more bacterial cells than human cells. In healthy people, these bacteria are typically harmless and often helpful, keeping disease-causing microbes at bay. But, when disturbances knock these bacterial populations out of balance, illnesses can arise. Periodontitis, a severe form of gum disease, is one example.

In a new study, University of Pennsylvania researchers show that bacteria responsible for many cases of periodontitis cause this imbalance, known as dysbiosis, with a sophisticated, two-prong manipulation of the human immune system.

Dental Insurance Healthcare, on How to Floss

Wednesday, Oct. 1st 2014 2:37 PM

How the American Dental Association describes how to floss correctly:

*   Start with about 18 inches of floss. Wrap most of it around the middle finger of one hand, the rest around the other middle finger.

*   Grasp the floss tightly between your thumbs and forefingers, and use a gentle shoeshine motion to guide it between teeth.

*   When the floss reaches the gum line, form a C shape to follow the contours of the tooth.

*   Hold the floss firmly against the tooth, and move the floss gently up and down.

*   Repeat with the other tooth, and then repeat the entire process with the rest of your teeth, “unspooling” fresh sections of floss as you go along.

Thursday, Sep. 25th 2014 1:37 PM

Often times there are people that will think that food does not get caught between their teeth so flossing is really not needed.  However they would be wrong, because flossing is not so much about removing food bits between teeth as it is about removing dental plaque that forms on tooth surfaces between cleanings.

Dental plaque is what causes tooth decay, inflamed gums, periodontal disease, and eventually tooth loss. Flossing is an effective way to remove plaque between teeth.

Dental Insurance Healthcare, What is Periodontal disease

Wednesday, Sep. 17th 2014 1:12 PM

Periodontal disease (Gum Disease) is a serious infections that, left untreated, may lead to tooth loss.  Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Periodontal disease can affect one tooth or many teeth.

It begins when the bacteria in plaque causes the gums to become inflamed.  If left untreated by a dentist, plaque can spread and grow below the gum line. Toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque irritate the gums. The toxins stimulate a chronic inflammatory response and the tissues and bone that support the teeth are broken down and destroyed.
